So, I guess that sums up my experience with the V3800N — it’s not going to become my everyday camera any time soon. But, it is still considerably lighter than even the MX (not as small, though), and I will still use it as a lightweight travel kit.
It’s quick enough to shoot, but some things are just weird. The relatively short distance of the advance lever is nice, but the lack of ratchet is insanely primitive. I’d take a knob over a non-ratcheting lever, but that’s just me. The DOF preview is also in a strange place, for me, but it is really fast and light, and that is exceedingly pleasant.
The finder is… shiny. It’s really reflective in there, and unless you’re hitting it dead-on, those reflections can get in the way. 3 LEDs for metering is fine, but more would be better. The meter is really quite nice, though, seemingly a much narrower spot than most center-weighted classics. The coarse prism is also something I prefer over a finer prism, and the diagonal split is much more useful than a horizontal (or vertical) split. Focusing just sort of happens.
The kit lens (I got the 50/1.7 prime, there’s also a zoom which I assume has similar build quality) is built much like an old MF lens… Which is to say it’s heavy. It has a great feel, don’t get me wrong, but it weighs down the front of the camera and just seems much more solid than the rest of the machine. Optically, I haven’t really put it through its paces yet (Act III will come some day), but it is really a brilliant feeling lens. The more I use it on the camera though, the more I think they might have made it a bit crappier to save on weight — a key benefit of the body, in my opinion. A cheap AF lens like the one pictured really balances things out weightwise and makes it a great candidate for light travel.
I have had two weird issues with reliability. The first was that the lens I was shooting (I forget which, to be honest) wasn’t being held open for whatever reason. Unmounting and remounting fixed this. The second was that the meter just stopped working right. It was responding to light, but seemed uncoupled from the lens settings or something. Messing a bit with the ISO adjustment seemed to fix this.
MLU in the self-timer is nice. Mirror slap is only an issue under very specific conditions, but it’s nice to have a little insurance policy there. The shutter is loud, but reassuring. I have yet to have any issues with firing, cocking, or film advance.
All in all, this camera excels at being affordable and light. Mostly light. If you want an everyday camera, getting a K or M series is probably a better option. Sure, buying a brand new camera means things should stay in working order for a while, but the old Pentaxes (and other big names) were workhorses, and are bound to be in good working order as well. But, it is a functional device with the perk of being exceptionally light, and a few nice tricks up its sleeve. For times when weight is at a premium, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
