Travel Money

The debris of past journeys…
Some of it is now historical! (I’m sure I have a couple of German Marks somewhere.)
How to buy currency online for travel
When you are traveling to another country, you may have to use their local currency to make purchases. Buying the currency online before you travel can save you money on exchange rates as well as ensure you have some local currency before you arrive. You can also shop around for different exchange rates instead of depending on the airport exchange kiosks.
Another advantage to purchasing your currency online before you travel is that you know you’ll get a good exchange rate. Plus you won’t have to worry about transaction fees for credit card purchases or ATM withdraws while in the other countries.
Go to your bank or credit card company’s online account access website and log in. Some banks and card issuers offer foreign currency for travel purposes. Locate a link that says “Currency Exchange,” or “Purchase Currency.” American Express is an example of a card issuer that offers traveler’s checks and foreign currency.
Visit AAA or a similar membership based travel organization. You can purchase a variety of currencies directly from their website. After logging in using your AAA account number, click on the “Travel” link followed by “Travel Money.”
Select “Order Now” under the “Foreign Currency” option. Log in again if prompted and choose the type of currency and the amount. You can also choose the denominations. For some currencies you can also select the number of each denomination that you want. For example you might want to purchase 100 Euro in denominations of 5 and 10. You could purchase five 10 bills and ten 5 bills to suit your needs.
Purchase travel money directly from currency exchange websites. Examples are provided at the end of this article.
Be sure to provide your current mailing address and billing information so you receive the money in a timely matter.
Be aware that exchange rate fees may be assessed by the bank or organization providing the currency. These should be listed towards the end of the purchasing process although you may need to check the fine print before proceeding.
Never follow links through unsolicited e-mails or messages for currency exchanges or online money purchasing.
Always protect your currency and keep it in a secure location when traveling. You may consider purchasing a money holder designed to be keep underneath clothing or in an inner pocket of a jacket. Never leave your currency out in the open or laying around a hotel room.
