With the invention of the wheel it seems that human kind has always shown a keen interest in various modes of transport. They certainly have come a long long way with respect to their innovations since the days of the horse drawn chariot. Therein perhaps lies the key to the motivation and persistence of the early pioneers of such inventions, the need to have the upper hand in times of war, aircraft being a prime example. At least everyone seems to benefit from the spin-offs of such great ideas eventually. A close scientific study of nature often results in some truly spectacular and often intriguing designs. Amazingly, these can usually be predicted long in advance, with the confidence that the technology will exist at some point in the future. Take the study of birds as an example. Aircraft owes a lot to those who persevered to find a solution for the replication of the wings of a bird, in order for man to be able to take to the air. Regardless of how ridiculous those early aircraft specimens may have looked, or how clumsy they where in operation, the resulting aircraft of today are a great testimony to their optimism.
