Affordable luxury ski holidays

November 14, 2011

As a result of fewer huge, monolithic, eyesore alpine developments there is now a great deal more chalet style accommodation in the Alps. This does not mean that the stock of more budget orientated properties has diminished as such, but it does mean that the skier in search of a luxury ski holiday has a lot more choice.
There has always been an upmarket sector, catering for the more monied skier, but now the facilities and service once their preserve are within the reach of mainstream skiers. This has come about for a number of reasons from new developments to redevelopment, more widespread availability of hot tubs and saunas to greater awareness by architects, designers and owners of this burgeoning sector.
Although there is still a fair amount of development in alpine resorts, many of these are in more exclusive areas such as Val d’Isere’s Le Fornet, or on the out skirts of Meribel in the Trois Vallees.
Chalet Jacod, in Le Fornet is a perfectexample of a new-build that is tailored to the ‘affordable luxury ski holiday’ sector. It’s interior designer has specified top quality materials, with a number of exciting twists and superb use of space, whilst bring the luxuries that are expected of the market. Larger bath and shower rooms, imaginatively decorated communal areas, and bedrooms with more than a little decadence! However, all of this has been done with an eye to the requirements of affordable luxury. The result is a stunning new chalet with all of the luxuries to be expected at this end of the market, but at an affordable price.
The alternative to new-build is for owners to redesign and refurbish existing ski chalets. Providing the building is big enough to start with, this can bring about benefits which are closed new developers of new properties. These are location, location and location. The Chalet Nyon in Morzine is a current example of a chalet which has been re-imagined by a London based interior designer, and refitted to very exacting standards. This is a real skiers chalet, in a wooded valley within a few metres of the resort’s best ski areas and virtually ski to door. It is unlikely that permission would be available for new developments in such an area, making re-development of such chalets an excellent option.
If you thought that the luxury ski holiday was going to be too expensive, look again. Introductory deals abound for new-build ski chalets, and redesigned existing chalets are filling the affordable luxury sector in time for the new season.
